Happy New Year! 

It’s a brand new calendar year, the traditional time for setting New Year’s resolutions, or promises, to accomplish personal goals and change behaviors. 

Whether or not you set resolutions in your personal life, consider making a commitment to improve one area of your remote work practices this year. Goals can serve as guiding principles, offering a sense of purpose and direction in the absence of conventional office structures. They also provide a framework for you to prioritize your tasks, allocate time efficiently, and measure progress. 

Below are several potential areas for improvement and examples of specific steps to get started: 

  • Visibility: Share your personal contributions, focus on impression management, and start building your personal brand. 

  • Advocacy: Make the business case for remote work. Speak up for remote workers who are not in the room. 

  • Communication: Adopt more async practices, run better virtual meetings, and improve the clarity and efficiency of your written communications. 

  • Leadership: Stop micromanaging. Focus on teambuilding. 

  • Connections: Expand your professional network, reconnect with old colleagues, and spend time developing meaningful work relationships.  

  • Digital tool fluency: Learn how to use new tools, improve your proficiency using existing tools, and, when possible, teach tools to others.  

  • Balance: Set and maintain boundaries. Make sure you regularly disconnect from work. 

Choosing just one area to focus on creates a sense of direction for your professional development, which is especially important at a time when there are limitless learning and growth opportunities.
