Use Objectives as Meeting Titles

A Tiny Shift to Make Meetings More Productive

šŸŖž Reflect

How much thought do you put into the titles of your virtual meetings?

šŸ’” Concept

What do these meeting titles have in common?

ā€œTeam meetingā€

ā€œProject meetingā€

ā€œCheck-inā€

They donā€™t say anything substantial about why these meetings are on your calendar.

So what?

Having the purpose of the meeting as its title helps attendees quickly understand two important things:

  • Why is the meeting on their calendar?

  • What are they supposed to accomplish in the meeting?

Our attention is spread thin these days, so adding a meetingā€™s objective as its title makes it easier for people to prioritize how they spend their time. Whatā€™s more, by making the objective explicit, organizers establish a foundation for a more productive and outcome-oriented discussion, ultimately contributing to the overall success of the meeting.

But what if you donā€™t have a purpose to add as the meetingā€™s title? Thatā€™s a clear sign you donā€™t need the meeting at all. Cancel it, and give everyone that time back in their day.

šŸŽ¬ Take Action

  • The next time you schedule a virtual meeting, title it with the objective or purpose (for example: ā€œAlign on campaign strategyā€ or ā€œDecide on next steps for proposalā€). Use terms from the Placeless Taxonomy if you need guidance on meeting purposes.

  • Adjust the titles of existing meetings that you own to reflect their objectives.

  • Design your meeting agendas to ensure youā€™re focused on accomplishing the stated objective(s).
