😁 Add Moments of Joy to Remote Work
Simple Ways to Boost Your Mood and Connect with Your Team
🎒 Microlesson
🪞 Reflect
Think about your remote workday. Are there any moments that feel a bit dull or lonely? How does this affect your motivation and focus?
💡 Concept
While working remotely can sometimes feel monotonous, intentionally adding moments of joy and levity can make a big difference. By adding small pockets of joy to your day, you can boost your mood, energy, and focus and even create a stronger sense of connection with your teammates. Here are some easy ways to add joy into your remote work routine:
🎉 Start meetings with lighthearted openers.
Suggest starting a meeting with a fun icebreaker or a quick check-in question like “What’s something good that happened this week?” or “Anyone reading or watching something that you’d like to recommend?” These small conversations can bring some lightness and help you feel more connected to your teammates.
🖼️ Personalize your workspace.
Make your workspace feel like your own! Adding a favorite photo, a new plant, or a piece of artwork can really brighten your work area. You could even share a picture of your setup in a team chat. Seeing others’ spaces can be a fun way to learn a bit more about each other and get some inspiration for your own office area.
🌱 Take short breaks for connection.
Schedule a couple of informal, virtual “coffee breaks” or chats with teammates throughout the month. These don’t need an agenda; they’re just a chance to catch up. It’s a great way to bring back some of the casual interactions you might miss from the office.
🎨 Join creative challenges.
If your team does any kind of monthly challenge—like a “show your pet” day or a cooking challenge—jump in! These activities don’t take much time but can be a lot of fun, and they give everyone a chance to share something personal in a relaxed format.
🎶 Share music or other fun recommendations.
Music can be a big mood booster. You could start a shared playlist with your team, where everyone adds their favorite songs, or swap podcast recommendations in the team chat. Listening to something someone else suggested can make you feel a bit more connected, even from afar.
🎬 Take Action
Next time you’re setting up your remote workspace or joining a virtual meeting, try one of these actions:
Suggest a quick, fun check-in question at the start of a meeting.
Add some personal items to your workspace, and consider sharing a picture of your setup.
Take a short virtual coffee break with a colleague and catch up informally.
Join in on any lighthearted challenges or share something you’re enjoying, like a song or show recommendation, with your team.
Adding a few of these joyful moments into your day can help make remote work feel more fun and connected!
