📣 Be an Advocate for Flexible Work
How to Advance Workplace Flexibility for Yourself and Others
🎒 Microlesson
🪞 Reflect
If flexible work opportunities were more widely available, how would that impact your life? How might it impact your organization, community, and beyond?
💡 Concept
A flexible work advocate is an individual who actively promotes, supports, and helps facilitate flexible work arrangements. The following are examples of advocates that you might be able to identify in your own networks:
thought leaders in workplace experience, HR, learning and development, change management, and organizational development that publicly share research and best practices on implementing flexible work policies
talent acquisition professionals and hiring managers who lobby to expand hiring pools with flexible work categories
employees and job seekers who negotiate flexible work arrangements for their own roles, paving the way for other employees to do the same
Along with job opportunities, education, and workplace flexibility, advocacy is a critical piece of the flexible career ecosystem. Without these collective voices, we would not have the number of flexible work options that we have today.
If you want to continue to reap the benefits of flexible work options like remote work and nonlinear workdays—and make those benefits available to more people—then start exploring ways you can make flexible work advocacy a more consistent practice.
🎬 Take Action
Negotiate for more flexibility. Identify the factors that are most important to decision-makers, such as cost and productivity, and make the business case for flexibility. What could the decision-makers and the company gain by allowing for flexibility?
Follow news, research, and trends. Follow workplace research from sources like Global Workplace Analytics, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Gallup, World Economic Forum, and WFH Research. Staying updated on topics related to flexible work can help you make the case at your workplace.
Get connected & involved. Follow fellow remote work advocates that share research and thought leadership about the future of work, and connect with other remote workers in your organization or field.
Excel at remote work. Establish yourself as a remote work champion by modeling effective remote work behaviors and continuing to master skills like async communication to help you thrive in a flexible work environment.
