Make Public Recognition a Habit in Remote and Hybrid Teams
Use Existing Tools to Help Make Contributions Visible

šŖ Reflect
When was the last time you publicly shared kudos to a coworker? When was the last time someone publicly complimented your efforts?
š” Concept
Having your contributions recognized in the workplace doesnāt just feel goodārecognition also increases satisfaction and engagement at work.
And while public and private recognition are both valuable, public recognition is especially helpful for members of remote or hybrid teams to ensure that their contributions are seen. Such a practice can significantly help combat proximity bias.
However, incorporating recognition in a remote or hybrid team can be challenging due to the lack of face-to-face interaction, lack of physical proximity, and the need for intentional communication efforts.
By creating recognition practices that leverage existing communication tools, distributed teams can build the habit of regularly recognizing team members and making contributions visible. For example, a tool like HeyTaco that integrates with Slack and Teams can be useful in fostering a culture of appreciation.
At first, practicing recognition will require consistency, effort, and a conscious commitment to making it a regular part of your interactions and distributed team culture.
One way to build the habit is to create a recurring task or notification in a project management tool to remind you to send affirmations. To help others join in, you can use your existing communication platforms to remind team members to publicly share affirmations as well.
Every time you recognize a remote team memberās contributions in a public channel, youāre helping to elevate that team memberās visibility and reinforcing the value of their work to the rest of the team. This can boost their morale, motivation, and sense of connection with the team, which can ultimately lead to increased productivity and better collaboration.
š¬ Take Action
Here are some ways to make public recognition a habit:
Send a coworker an affirmation in a public channel today.
Acknowledge a coworkerās contributions in a meeting.
Set a reminder to send regular kudos to team members.
Encourage others to send affirmations.
Share your own accomplishments in daily check-ins and/or weekly summaries.
