📹 Turn Your Video Camera On for Greater Connection, Visibility, and Inclusion

Reduce Isolation and Proximity Bias by Embracing Video

🎒 Microlesson

🪞 Reflect

How connected do you feel to colleagues you’ve never seen on camera?

💡 Concept

Seventy-five percent of professionals report that having cameras on during virtual meetings makes it easier to connect.

If you’re feeling disconnected or like your participation and contributions are going unnoticed, look for more opportunities to present yourself on camera.

Video offers a visual dimension that helps bridge the physical gap between team members, fostering a more personal and engaging interaction.

Seeing facial expressions, gestures, and body language adds depth and clarity to communication, allowing for better understanding and empathy among colleagues. It also helps your colleagues connect your work words to you as a whole human being, which can help reduce proximity bias

Video can be used to improve async communication as well, allowing you to convey nuances and emotions that may not come across as clearly in written communication. Are there memos you could record and send to your team rather than writing an email or sending a message through Slack?

In essence, embracing video is not just about visibility; it's about building meaningful connections and creating an inclusive environment where all team members feel equally engaged and valued.

🎬 Take Action

  • Turn your camera on. In your next group meeting, turn your camera on even if it’s not required or expected of you.

  • Send a video message. Instead of typing your next message, consider recording your message on video using a tool like Loom.

  • Record a video self-introduction. If you use a personal user manual, add a short video introducing yourself.
