🤳 Impression Management for Remote Workers

Amplify Your Personal Brand in a Distributed Environment

🎒 Microlesson

🪞 Reflect

What type of impression do you leave as a remote worker?

💡 Concept

Your personal brand differentiates you from your colleagues and informs others of what to expect from their interactions with you. You communicate your brand through your writing and speaking as well as through your appearance, actions, and online presence. We often express our brand unknowingly!

And since your brand shapes the ideas and impressions others have of you, your goal should be to project positive and persuasive messaging about yourself.

The process of ensuring that your brand is portrayed in a positive light is called impression management. There are two main components of impression management:

Trust: Do your colleagues see you as reliable, honest, and trustworthy?

Visibility: Do your colleagues see your contributions?

Impression management is different for remote workers because you need to place more emphasis on asynchronous brand elements such as LinkedIn profiles and posts, chat messages, emails, written documentation, and interactions via video. Remote workers need to be more intentional in their written, verbal, visual, and non-verbal communication to ensure they’re sending the right message.

Keep in mind that when you do have an opportunity to meet someone face to face, you need to make it count. Focus those times on building connections and fostering trust, which are more difficult to do asynchronously.

🎬 Take Action

Choose at least one of these areas to manage your impression this week:

  • Update your profiles. Whether you use LinkedIn or an internal tool, update your professional profile to make sure it has the latest and most accurate information about your role and experience.

  • Build task-based trust. Document your action items consistently, do what you say you will do, meet deadlines, and provide proactive updates.

  • Connect with your colleagues. Create and use opportunities to build and maintain strong relationships with remote and co-located coworkers.

  • Share weekly accomplishments with your team.  Proactively share progress and milestones with your colleagues and supervisors to ensure that your efforts are recognized and appreciated.
